Lake Protection: -
As part of this work we handle protection
and conservation of Lakes and Tanks
in Hyderabad. Hyderabad originally
had 1044 lakes as late as in 1920,
but presently has only 450 lakes.
The reasons for this drastic fall
in numbers is due to the fact that
the increasing population has lead
to a real estate boom to exploit
which some unscrupulous builders
and developers are resorting to
encroachments of lakes and tanks.
This has lead to some major problems
like falling groundwater levels
in the city and an increase in vulnerability
to flooding even on occasions of
medium rainfall due to lack of capacities
to hold rainwater in the form of
lakes and tanks.
We have adopted 5 tanks and have
formed Protection Committees from
members of the surrounding committees
for these lakes (which have been
identified by NRSA as potential
drinking water sources if proper
conservation measures are adopted)
who actively participate in this
conservation and revitalization
activity by preventing encroachments,
garbage and debris dumping etc. |

Industrial
Pollution: - Hyderabad
is known as the Bulk drug capital
of India. This unique distinction
has brought its own set of problems
related to Environmental pollution.
There are 22 villages very close
to the industrial estates of Patancheru
Area, which suffer from the greediness
of industries. These industries
let out harmful untreated effluents
into nearby water bodies like lakes
and streams to cut their costs due
to which the soil and water are
highly polluted and unfit even for
agriculture.
The organization is working in 10
villages in Patancheru area where
Industrial Pollution is a Major
Problem to create a strong network
of community based watchdog groups
for environmental protection. We
work closely with Environmental
Protection oriented Individuals,
CBOs, Organisations etc to create
a strong public outcry during times
of violation of Environmental law.

Waste
Water Utilization: -
The River Musi flowing through the
heart of the city has over the years
become an eyesore as it has become
the receptacle for garbage and sewage
generated in huge quantities by
the ever-expanding bursting-at-the-seams
metropolis. This mix of untreated
sewage and industrial effluents
which enter domestic sewage lines
illegally is entering the ground
water all along the river course
and making it unfit for human usage.
This untreated waste water is used
to cultivate Para grass for cattle
feed and leafy vegetables and some
horticultural crops which are contaminated
by harmful residual chemicals which
enter the human food chain causing
immeasurable damage.
We are working along the Musi riverbed
within the city limits to work out
the means and methods for safe usage
of treated wastewater being generated
by the city. As part of the work
we are associated with Washer men,
Fodder growing Farmers, Agricultural
Labor, Slum dwellers on the banks
of Musi in the city area. |

MOINABAD
(Ranga Reddy Dist)
This office handles interventions in Rural
Areas of Ranga Reddy District as part
of IWRM Project of SVARAJ. The present
work tries to draw out solutions to the
conflict arising out of competition between
irrigation water and drinking water from
the same source by fostering an environment
for healthy debate and trying to implement
easy techniques and technologies for optimal
utilization of the increasingly rare water
resources. The focus of the work is on:
-
Organic Farming
Water Conservation in Agriculture
Harvesting of Rain Water
Strengthening Farmer Groups etc.
SURYAPET (Nalgonda Dist)
This office primarily deals with water equity
issues of Suryapet and surrounding villages.
Its main goal is to awaken the community
to the pressing need of equity in water
distribution, water conservation, prevention
of water contamination and creating a network
of people and strong community Based Organizations
to work for the above aspects. The pressing
problems for Suryapet and surrounding villages
are:-
| 1) |
Presence of Fluoride
above limits in Groundwater due to
which Groundwater is not potable,
and |
| 2) |
Pollution of water in Musi river
by upstream big brother Hyderabad
City due to which surface waters are
not potable. |
For reaching the above goal we work on two
fronts i.e. Drinking Water and Irrigation
Water.
In this office we are also working with
Youth Associations and other CBOs on issues
like Employment opportunities, Education,
Corruption, income generation activities
etc. |

| AVAHAN INDIA
AIDS INITIATIVE PROJECT |
This project
is being implemented in Kurnool Town and
is supported by India HIV/AIDS Alliance:
Andhra Pradesh. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
(BMGF), USA in turn supports this. The project
is implemented under the name Avahan. Under
this project, we are working with the Key
Population that is vulnerable to the HIV
infection. This includes MSM (Men having
Sex with Men) and TG (Trans Gender) communities
and our efforts are to curb the menace of
ever increasing population afflicted with
HIV/AIDS as they fall under the High-risk
category.
The major activities under this project
are providing increased access to STI diagnosis
and treatment by running an exclusive clinic
for them and increasing availability and
access to condoms by Sex workers and their
clients by conducting awareness campaigns,
counseling sessions etc.
The ultimate objective of the project is
to build up a community centric and community
owned project through developing effective
leadership and creating mechanisms for the
disadvantaged community to engage in a constructive
debate in the society at large. |
